CCT: Critical Care Transfer

CCT Ambulances
CCT ambulances in the County of Ventura operate with a specially trained Mobile Intensive Care Registered Nurse and a full crew from an ALS Ambulance.  A CCT Unit is used to transport some of the most critically ill and injured patients from one hospital to another.  Most of the time these patients are being transported to another hospital to receive treatment that they cannot receive at the sending facility and receiving that treatment may be a matter of life and death.

AMR-Ventura staffs one full-time CCT ambulance within the county and has the ability to call on other AMR operations within Southern California to provide additional CCT Units as needed.

CCT Nurses – What are they?
A CCT Nurse is an RN that has many years of experience in the Emergency Room or Intensive Care Unit of a hospital but they have now chosen to use their skills in a mobile environment.  Think of them as being able to take the hospital’s ICU on the road with the patient.  CCT Nurses deliver the same treatment and medications for patients that the RN in the ICU would, the only difference is that they have to do it while moving down the freeway at 65MPH.  While taking care of the patient, the CCT Nurse will also have a Paramedic in the back of the ambulance to assist them.

Equipment – What's on an Critical Care Transport Ambulance?
A CCT ambulance carries a massive amount of medical equipment on it and is actually much larger than an ALS Ambulance that is staffed with only Paramedics.  It has almost every item you would find in an Emergency Room or Intensive Care Unit of a hospital.  A few of those items are a blood pressure cuff, a stethoscope, ECG monitor/manual defibrillator, external cardiac pacemaker, ventilator, IV's, IV Pumps, over 30 life saving medications, splints, cervical collars, back boards, a car seat for transporting children, and oxygen.
