ALS Ambulances
ALS ambulances in Ventura County operate with either two paramedics or one paramedic and one specially trained EMT to deliver advanced life support care to ill or injured patients in need of medical help.  Paramedics respond to all types of calls.  From a person having trouble breathing to traffic collision.

AMR-Ventura staffs twenty full-time ALS ambulances covering our five Ambulance Services Areas.  In addition to the seventeen full-time ALS ambulances we also have additional equipment and vehicles to provide up to seven additional ALS ambulances at a moments notice for deployment as an out-of-county strike team or to provide additional resources to Ventura County in the event of a disaster or to provide Special Event Medical Services for any event within Ventura County.

ALS Supervisor Units
AMR-Ventura has two full-time ALS Supervisor Units, otherwise known as Paramedic Supervisors.  Each ALS Supervisor Unit is staffed with one senior level Ventura County Paramedic that responds as the closest ALS resource to any 9-1-1 call for help that they may be closest to, functions as a command level resource in all Multi Casualty Incidents and serve as the strike team leader for any out of county response.  On top of their duties as a paramedic, they also function as the first level of management for AMR-Ventura.

Paramedics – What are they?
A paramedic is not just an ambulance driver and an ambulance is not just a quick ride to the hospital.  Did you ever wonder why an ambulance is on scene with a patient in the back and not going to the hospital?  Well it's because a paramedic is a very highly trained professional medical provider.  Paramedics deliver treatment and medications for patients with chest pain, trouble breathing, diabetic emergencies or taking care of trauma patients involved in any type of accident.  They deliver babies, start intravenous lines, place tubes into the trachea to assist with breathing and defibrillate a patient's heart back into a regular rhythm.  Paramedics within Ventura County also use their skills to safely transport sick and injured patients from one hospital to another destination. Sometimes these transports are required so the patient can receive a level of care not proved at the sending facility or it may be due to insurance requirements.  No matter what the reason, our paramedics are up to the task.  But some patients being transported from one hospital to another may be so critical that they require medications or procedures that paramedics are unable to provide.  If that’s the case, it’s time to call in our Registered Nurse staffed Critical Care Transport Unit.

Equipment – What's on an Advanced Life Support ambulance?
An ALS ambulance carries various medical equipment on it.  It has many of the things that you would find in an emergency department at a hospital.  A few of those items are a blood pressure cuff, a stethoscope, ECG monitor/manual defibrillator, IV's,  more then 25 life savings medications, splints, cervical collars, back boards, a car seat for transporting children, and oxygen.
