The single most important item to have on hand in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest is an external defibrillator.  All of our ALS Level Responders (Paramedic Ambulances, Paramedic Supervisors and Paramedic Standby Units) are equipped with manual defibrillators that enable the paramedic to view an ECG of the heart’s electrical activity in order to provided advanced level cardiac care and to deliver a life-saving shock to the heart if needed.

Automated External Defibrillators, or AEDs, have the power to deliver the same life-saving shock that the manual defibrillator provides to restore a heart's normal rhythm but do not require a Paramedic to analyze the heart rhythm.  Whether it is used by a trained first responder or a lay-person, the presence of an AED can mean the difference between life and death to a victim of sudden cardiac arrest.  Most AED’s can only be used on patients that are older then 8 years of age but our Physician Medical Director has authorized the use of Medtronic Infant/Child Reduced Energy Defibrillation Electrodes that allow our AED’s to be used on any patient older then 1 year of age.

American Medical Response uses only Medtronic brand defibrillators in all of it ambulances and for all special events.  Almost 90% of the EMS providers in the country use Medtronic Defibrillators as well.  The same technology that is used by our paramedics and in emergency rooms across the country is available in the LifePak CR Plus and the LifePak 500 AED’s that we use on all of our BLS Level Responders (EMT Ambulances, Bike Medic Team, and Advanced EMT/Paramedic Rovers).
